History and Development

For over 40 years, specialist in tool and process monitoring in machining technology.

The Company

Dr.-Ing. Klaus Nordmann
Dr.-Ing. Klaus Nordmann

Founded in 1989 by Dr.-Ing. Klaus Nordmann as a "technology-oriented company" with the support of the Federal Ministry for Research. The funding was based on 2 inventions by Dr. Nordmann: the acoustic emission hydrophone (Sensor SEH) for acoustic emission measurement using a coolant jet as a sound wave conductor, and the sensor for magneto-inductive wear and breakage monitoring of rotating tools (Sensor EMS). Since 1990, further measurement techniques have been developed (see also News), for which additional Patents have been granted.

After 10 years at the Cologne-Braunsfeld Technology Park, Nordmann moved into its own building in Hürth near Cologne in 1999. In 2003, due to growing international business – especially with Swiss machine tool manufacturers and watch makers – Nordmann International GmbH was founded with a branch office in Pfäffikon (Switzerland).

This enables these customers to be supplied "just in time" with both materials and service. Customers in Southern Europe have also benefited from this. In other countries, Nordmann maintains its own offices (USA) or cooperates with local companies and representatives (e.g. India, China, Great Britain, Korea).
For many years, Nordmann has been recognised as a competent supplier of highly sensitive measurement systems and sensors for tool and process monitoring. This is demonstrated by the trust placed by several automotive manufacturers who have included Nordmann in their specifications for new machines and retrofits. Tool monitoring is characterised by excellent user guidance and transparent monitoring methods (avoiding hidden algorithms).

Thanks to the use of various measurement methods (acoustic emission, force, effective power, pressure, strain, displacement, laser), Nordmann's "Tool Monitors" are capable of monitoring a wide variety of metal-cutting machine tools. The sensor programme is the most comprehensive on the market. Some sensors operate without contact or transmit measured values wirelessly and without an additional power supply, allowing measurements to be taken in the immediate vicinity of the tool.

The focus is on tool monitoring and workpiece dimension control. Particularly challenging monitoring tasks – such as breakage detection for very small tools and multi-spindle drill heads – are a Nordmann speciality.

Although the tool monitoring components are manufactured in series, the company's strength lies in customer-specific solutions, both on the hardware and software side.

New customers are usually convinced of the performance and benefits of a Tool Monitor through a trial installation on their own machine. In difficult monitoring cases, this trial installation also allows the Nordmann technician to verify the feasibility of the monitoring task. It is part of the Nordmann philosophy to only deliver fully functional and effective tool monitoring systems to the customer.
